General Murtala Mohammed becomes Head of State:
On the 29th of July 1975,General Murtala Mohammed came to power in a bloodless coup overthrowning the government of General Yakubu Gowon. He accused the military government of General Gowon of delaying the promise to return Nigeria to civil rule.

Assassination of General Murtala Mohammed:
General Murtala Mohammed was assassinatd on the 13th of February 1976, in an abortive coup. His Chief of staff, Lt. General Olusegun Obasanjo became head of state.He made sure he followed the plan to return to civil rule. In the same year seven new states were created bringing the total number to 19
