Nigerian Independence:
Nigeria was granted full independence on the 1st of October 1960, as a federation of three regions (northern, western and eastern) under a constitution that provided for parliamentary form of government. Under the constitution, each of the three regions retained a substantial measure of self government.

First Republic:
In October 1963, Nigeria became a republic, declaring itself as the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The last Governor General, Nnamdi Azikiwe became the first President of the country. In the same year a fourth region (the mid west) was established.
